Getting started

Install Open Arc, go through the welcome screens, make it your default browser and keep it up to date.

Install

  1. Download Open Arc. It needs macOS 14 or later on a Mac with Apple silicon.
  2. Open the downloaded .dmg and drag Open Arc into Applications.
  3. Open Open Arc from Applications. The app is signed with a Developer ID and notarized by Apple, so macOS opens it without warnings.

The welcome screens

The first launch walks you through a few short steps: create your first Space, import from another browser, choose whether Open Arc is your default browser, and choose whether to sync your sidebar through iCloud. Every step can be skipped and changed later in Settings (⌘,).

Find your way around

  • The sidebar on the left holds everything: Favorites at the top, then the current Space with its pinned tabs, a divider, and Today tabs below it. Hide or show it with ⌘S.
  • The command bar (⌘T) opens pages, searches the web, finds your tabs and runs commands. See The command bar.
  • Spaces are separate sidebars for different parts of your life. Switch with ⌃1–⌃9 or swipe left and right on the sidebar. See Organizing your sidebar.
  • Today tabs are archived after they have been idle for a while, so the sidebar stays tidy. See Today and the archive.

Make Open Arc your default browser

Open Settings ▸ Account and click Make Open Arc your default, then confirm in the macOS dialog. You can also do it in macOS System Settings ▸ Desktop & Dock ▸ Default web browser.

Updates

Open Arc updates itself. Choose Open Arc ▸ Check for Updates… to look for a new version now. Settings ▸ General ▸ Automatically update Open Arc decides whether updates are downloaded and installed without asking.

Choose an app icon

Settings ▸ Icon offers six app icons. The Dock picks up your choice right away.
